Why Yo-Yo Dieting Doesn’t Work

yo yo diet

There’s a new fad diet on the market every week. They flood our social media news feeds and promise amazing never-before-seen results.

People become obsessed with these fad diets and switch from doing one to the other to another. Every time you see this person, they’re on a new diet, or they’re “off track” and need to hop back on but can’t seem to. That is what many refer to as yo-yo dieting.

As someone who offers nutrition coaching in Orange County, I want to teach you why this trend can be harmful and why you should switch your focus to making lifestyle changes.

Why It’s Harmful

Increase Body Fat

This one may seem confusing, but it’s true. Many people who jump on and off of fad diets will find that they produce quick results. But as soon as they stop the diet, all of the weight and then some comes back.

Higher Risk for Heart Disease

What people may not know is that frequent fluctuations in weight have been connected to coronary artery disease. Yo-yo dieting is notorious for causing major and frequent fluctuations in weight.

It Increases Your Appetite

Many of the fad diets used for yo-yo dieting have very limited and unhealthy calorie limits. Over time, the restriction of calories could make your body feel more ravenous for food. With this appetite increase, you can also expect a calorie increase.

It Doesn’t Improve Your Health

When we are trying to lose weight, it can be easy to lose sight of the main goal. We are all trying to improve our health – that should always be goal number one. Yo-yo dieting is known to decrease one’s health, not improve it.

I don’t know about you, but this list of reasons is way too long to convince me that yo-yo dieting is okay and safe.

Why You Should Focus on Healthy Habits Instead

Easier to Maintain

Unlike the fad diets people use for yo-yo dieting, healthy habits are much easier to maintain. These habits can include things as simple as getting thirty minutes of physical activity a day, increasing your water intake, and eating more protein with every meal.

Non-Restrictive

You should never feel guilty for wanting to indulge every once in a while. Whether you want a scoop of ice cream or a small slice of cake at your child’s birthday, you should be able to have it without it “messing up your diet.”

It Stabilizes Weight

Because you won’t be on and off-track constantly, your weight will become more stable. No more dangerous rapid fat loss and no more quick weight gains. It will be a more steady and even flow.

A healthy lifestyle allows you to live a fuller and longer life. Yo-yo dieting will never be able to offer that.
